Australia’s Transport for New South Wales (NSW) has awarded a $73m contract to Laing O’Rourke Construction Australia to design and build a new transport interchange at Wickham.
Announced by transport minister Gladys Berejiklian, this funding is expected to help commuters to have a better connection with trains, buses and light rail.
Berejiklian said: "Truncation of the rail line, construction of a new transport interchange at Wickham and a new light rail network are all part of the government’s plans to completely revitalise Newcastle and reconnect the city centre with the waterfront.
"One of the key pieces of feedback we received during community consultation was around the look of the interchange. The contractor’s first job will be to improve the design of the interchange from the artist impression shared earlier this year."
The project also includes the construction of a fully accessible pedestrian bridge over the rail corridor near Railway Street.
The construction of light rail is expected to begin in late 2015 and the assembly of the new transport interchange and stabling facilities is scheduled for completion in late 2016.
Recently, NSW Transport awarded the $2.1bn CBD and South East Light Rail line contract to the ALTRAC Light Rail consortium, formerly named as Connecting Sydney.
The consortium will be responsible for the design, construction, services relocations, operation and maintenance of this 12km-long light rail project, as well as the operation and maintenance of the Inner West Light Rail network.
