MotivePower, a subsidiary of Wabtec, has won a $45m contract from Toronto transit authority Metrolinx in Canada to equip new engines and propulsion systems in 11 of its MP40PH-3C diesel locomotives.

Under the deal, Motive Power will deliver twin Cummins QSK60 engines to replace the 16-cylinder EMD 710GB series diesel engines used by Go Transit on commuter services.

Installation of new engines will bring the locomotives into line with US Environmental Protection Agency Tier 4 emissions standards.

According to Wabtec, the new engine will help the locomotives reduce diesel particulate emissions by about 85% and NOx emissions by about 75% compared to the current models.

Wabtec president and chief executive officer Albert Neupaver said these will be the first North American passenger locomotives to be equipped with Tier 4 technology.

"We believe MotivePower is well positioned to participate further in this market by offering similar environmental upgrades to existing diesel-electric commuter locomotives throughout North America as the new standards are phased in over the next several years," Neupaver said.

MotivePower originally built the Go Transit locomotives five years ago and will deliver their new engines in 2014.
