High Speed Two (HS2) has announced a shortlist of consultants, which will bid for two contracts worth more than £500m for phase II of the high-speed rail project in the UK.

The initial contract is worth £350m and will see the provision of civil design and environmental services for the sections of the route from Crewe to Manchester and from Birmingham to Leeds through Sheffield and the East Midlands.

Three joint ventures (JV) shortlisted by HS2 are Aecom, Capita, and Ineco's JV; Mott MacDonald and WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff's JV; and Atkins and Arcadis' JV, as well as sole bidder Arup.

"Phase II will significantly increase capacity, enhance connectivity and improve journeys."

HS2's chief executive Simon Kirby said: “Phase II will significantly increase capacity, enhance connectivity and improve journeys for millions of people travelling between London, the Midlands, and the major cities of the North.

“HS2 will be Britain’s largest infrastructure development, and has the potential to change the way the UK designs and builds projects of national significance.”

Under the second contract worth £170m, the HS2 phase 2 Hybrid Bill will be developed in 2019 and CH2M, Bechtel, and a JV between Mace and Turner & Townsend have been selected to carry out work.

HS2 has already awarded phase 1 engineering contracts of up to £350m to a partnership comprising Atkins, CH2M, and SENER for a period of ten years. Nine partnerships have also been selected to carry out civil engineering works, which are worth up to £11.8bn.

The HS2 phase 1 Hybrid Bill is currently passing through the House of Lords.
