H-J-H Final Design Partners (H-J-H), a joint venture (JV) of HNTB, Jacobs Engineering Group and Hatch Mott MacDonald, has secured an $88m contract from Sound Transit in the US to provide the final design for its East Link light rail extension in greater Seattle, Washington, US.

The JV will design the South Bellevue to the Overlake Transit Center portion of the East Link.

H-J-H’s section includes seven miles of double-track light rail transit, eight stations, a cut-and-cover tunnel in downtown Bellevue and long-span bridge crossings over Interstates 405 and 90.

The deal will see the JV carry out the contract packaging, preparation of key management plans, development of design schedule, confirming design criteria and standards.

H-J-H will also be responsible for establishing the design baseline estimate, advancing cost saving concepts, furthering station design development, carrying out community outreach and conducting value engineering.

The East Link final design will use three design contracts, of which two will be for the civil final design and one for the system final design.

The civil final design contract from the portion of East Rail will be authorised in two phases, including early work and detailed design.

The extension will see trains passing through East King County via I-90 from downtown Seattle to downtown Bellevue and the Overlake area of Redmond.

Trains on the extension will serve Rainier Avenue/I-90, Mercer Island, South Bellevue, Downtown Bellevue, Overlake Hospital, the Bel-Red Corridor, Overlake Village and the Overlake Transit Center.

Construction on the East Link project is expected to start in 2015, and operations are scheduled to commence in 2023.
