Gammon Construction, a joint venture of Balfour Beatty in South East Asia, has been awarded two rail contracts from Singapore’s Land Transport Authority and SMRT Trains.

The first S$174m (£87m) contract is for the design and construction of the Mayflower Station on the 30km underground rail Thomson Line.

"We are excited to have been awarded these prestigious contracts, and to be taking part in enhancing Singapore’s strategic MRT system expansion."

Expected to be fully completed in 2021, the Thomson Line will include 22 stations, including Mayflower Station and six interchange stations.

The Land Transport Authority will operate the line which, on completion, will be the sixth Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Line, and will run parallel to the existing North-South Line.

Work under the first contract will likely begin in the first quarter of 2014, and is scheduled to be completed by 2020.

Balfour Beatty chief executive Andrew McNaughton said: "We are excited to have been awarded these prestigious contracts, and to be taking part in enhancing Singapore’s strategic MRT system expansion.

"The key to our success is our collaborative approach and the sharing of the knowledge and technology across our business reduces the risk for our clients."

The second S$122m (£61m) contract from SMRT Trains will involve track system replacement on the existing north-south line, which will be modernised with timber sleepers replaced in concrete.

Work on the second contract will start in the fourth quarter of 2013 and is expected to complete by the end of January 2015. It is to be delivered in partnership with the UK rail team.
