Clapham Junction station to install intelligent lighting system

Clapham Junction, the busiest train station in the UK, is set to cut energy use by 35% with the introduction of Open Technology’s new lighting technology, the LiGO control system.

The new system is intended to provide the exact light levels required across the station, matching lighting use to train timetables, passenger presence, daylight levels and other factors.

The LiGO control system will allow Clapham Junction to automatically dim the lights down to a minimum when the station is not in operation or switch the lights off when the station is completely closed.

According to Open Technology, the lighting system will ensure maximum energy savings throughout the year and reduce light pollution in the surrounding area.

Open Technology managing director Chris Bedford said that with the new lighting system the company is able to offer maximum savings for the operators in addition to safety for staff and passengers

"Our LiGO system gives the confidence that appropriate light levels are maintained at all times, whilst ensuring that they are no higher than necessary," Bedford said.

"The lighting system will ensure maximum energy savings throughout the year and reduce light pollution in the surrounding area."

Since its initial installation in 2010 at Woking Station, the LiGO system has been installed at 25 different stations and train maintenance depots across the Wessex Route.

The installation is part of a South West Trains Network Rail Alliance climate change and energy reduction strategy, which is expected to achieve total annual savings of between £7m and £12m.

Southwest Trains, Network Rail Alliance environment manager Amy Dickinson said that intelligent lighting has enabled the alliance to save an average of 20% at each location.

"An automatic control keeps it simple for us. It enables us to save as much energy as possible, by dimming down and turning off automatically when not in use," Dickinson said.

"It also tracks usage, which helps us to spot any areas for improvement and understand how our buildings are being used."
