CAMC, China Railway and Yapilo have secured contracts to construct a 148km railway line in central Bolivia with an investment of $250m, financed by La Paz.

The construction of the railway project, which has been split into three sections, is expected to be completed in two years.

The first and second sections will cost $104m and $83m respectively, while the third section, which involves construction of bridges, will cost $47m. The remaining funds will be used to inspect and oversee the railway project.

The planned railway line will run to Bulo Bulo town in the central province of Cochabamba, connecting with another line in Santa Cruz to facilitate shipments of urea and ammonia from a petrochemical plant in Bulo Bulo to Brazil and Argentina.

Going forward, the Montero-Bulo Bulo line will be part of a larger rail network connecting Atlantic and Pacific ports.

In addition, three Chilean architects Carlos Martner, Fernando Castillo Velasco and Humberto Eliash have unveiled plans for a 93-mile tunnel linking Bolivia to the Pacific Ocean.

In January 2013, China Railway Construction has secured two contracts worth a total of RMB8.73bn ($1.4bn) for railway electrification and railway construction projects in China.
