Spanish train manufacturer CAF has been contracted by the Utrecht Regional Authority (BRU) to provide trams for the new Uithof Line that connects the Central Station with the Utrecht University Campus, the Netherlands.

In December, BRU shortlisted CAF for rolling stock contracts for the Uithof Line.

Under this contract, CAF will deliver 27 trams for this €440m light-rail project, which will see the construction of an 8km-long line with nine stations.

These new trams will be part of CAF’s Urbos platform, including five 100% low-floor modules. This bidirectional vehicle will have four double doors for each sidewall and is capable of running at a service speed of 70km/h.

With a capacity to accommodate up to 216 passengers, the tram will feature video entertainment and passenger information systems, including interior and exterior information screens and emergency intercom.

The first set of trams is expected to be delivered to the depot in Nieuwegein in 2017, and passenger service is scheduled to begin in mid-2018.

The infrastructure work of the line will be carried out by Dutch construction firm Royal BAM Group, along with installation of track and catenary, and construction of the nine stations.

In December, CAF signed a €500m contract with Dutch passenger railway operator Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) to deliver its Sprinter electric multiple-unit fleet.

Under this contract, CAF will provide 120 passenger trains for NS’s Sprinter service.
