Bombardier Transportation has been awarded a €36m contract from Turkish construction company Yapi Merkezi to supply mainline signalling solution for Ethiopia’s new 400km-long Awash-Weldia line.
Yapi Merkezi is responsible for the design and construction of the Awash-Weldia line project.
Bombardier will supply its Interflo 250 solution for the project that comes under the Ethiopian Railways’ investment programme to extend its rail network.
Yapi Merkezi board member Erdem Arioglu said: "This is one of the longest lines tendered as a turnkey project in Sub-Saharan Africa.
"Yapi Merkezi went through a very detailed selection process to determine its suppliers and sub-contractors and Bombardier was selected due to its proven track record and its successful, long-term cooperation with Yapi Merkezi on similar projects worldwide."
The system is based on the European rail traffic management system (ERTMS), the continuous communication-based signalling system offering a single standard for railway signalling.
The rail control solutions of Bombardier are widely using across Africa, including the Gautrain Rapid Rail Link and Durban’s Main Corridors in South Africa.
The Zambia’s north-south connection between Livingstone and Chingola and the upgrade of Morocco’s Casablanca to Tangiers line have recently benefitted from the control solutions of Bombardier.
The ERTMS systems developed by the company are deployed on more than 2,300 rail vehicles and 21,000km of track.
