BNSF Railway is planning to invest $110m in maintenance and rail capacity expansion programmes in Nebraska, US, in 2013.

The capacity improvement schemes include completing the construction of a new bridge over the Missouri River between Plattsmouth, Nebraska and Pacific Junction, Iowa, and one mile of new westbound wye track between the Bellwood and Ravenna subdivisions.

BNSF is also planning to improve its car and locomotive shops in Lincoln and carry out signal enhancements for federally-mandated positive train control (PTC).

The proposed investment will be used to continue the BNSF’s major track maintenance project in Nebraska, which includes 3,800 miles of track surfacing and undercutting work, along with the replacement of 130 miles of rail and nearly 115,000 railroad ties.

BNSF chairman and chief executive officer Matthew Rose said that the capital investments in Nebraska will help ensure its network is prepared for growing demand for freight rail.

"The capital investments in Nebraska will help ensure its network is prepared for growing demand for freight rail."

"Given the importance of a low-cost supply chain to the US economy, our privately funded rail infrastructure is well positioned to help Nebraska compete in global markets," Rose said.

The planned investment in the state is part of BNSF’s aim to invest $4.3bn during 2013, out of which nearly $2.3bn will be spent on improvements on the railway’s core network and related assets, while $1bn will be invested in locomotives, freight cars and other equipment acquisitions.

The programme also consists of $200m for positive train control and $800m for terminal, line and intermodal expansion and efficiency schemes.

Since 2000, the company has invested $42bn in the enhancement and expansion of its freight rail network.
