Beijer Electronics to deliver rail equipment to Washington metro rail network

Westermo, a subsidiary of Beijer Electronics, has won a SEK30m ($4.27m) order from Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) in the US to deliver IP communication solutions for 364 rail cars.

The company will deliver communication equipment, such as switches, routers and potential additional deliveries, to upgrade Washington’s metro and train network.

The first deliveries are expected to take place during the fourth quarter of 2013 and will run for a period of two and a half years.

According to Beijer Electronics, the order for communication systems is a part of a larger information system upgrade that will be delivered by Toshiba.

"PoE will allow both power and data to be transmitted on a single multi-core cable, reduce overall wiring and enable faster installation, while the Viper switches deliver up to 66W of power across 8 PoE ports."

The communication equipment also includes specific functions for control and surveillance, which will bring improved security to the rail network.

In June 2012, the company also unveiled two compact and rugged power-over-ethernet (PoE) switches that support video, LCDs and wireless LAN access points, to meet the demand for communication networks on railway rolling stock.

The new devices further improve Westermo’s new IP train concept, which delivers a complete ethernet switch and routing solution to provide better network infrastructure for trains.

The Viper-112-P8 and Viper-212-P8 twelve-port (8 PoE and 4 standard ethernet) managed switches support the IEEE 802.3at ‘plug-and-play’ PoE communications standard.

According to the company, PoE will allow both power and data to be transmitted on a single multi-core cable, reduce overall wiring and enable faster installation, while the Viper switches deliver up to 66W of power across 8 PoE ports.

The Viper switches, which are designed to meet the full requirements of the rail vehicle market, deliver improved levels of reliability and simplified network design, installation and maintenance.
