US-based construction firm Bechtel has been contracted to work with the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) for the Spadina subway extension project in Toronto, Canada.

Under this contract, Bechtel will be responsible to provide programme management services as part of an integrated delivery team with the TTC.

Valued at $80m, the contract will see Bechtel’s Canadian arm completing the remaining 30% of the subway extension, The Star reported.

"We recognise the importance of the Spadina subway extension to Toronto."

The project will extend the existing subway line across Toronto city’s boundary to the rapidly growing York region. This 8.6km extension will include six new stations and commuter parking.

Bechtel rail operations manager George Morschauser said: "We recognise the importance of the Spadina subway extension to Toronto and are fully committed to playing our part in the safe completion of this project by 31 December 2017.

"We look forward to working with the Toronto Transit Commission to deliver a quality, operational subway."
