Infrastructure group Balfour Beatty has secured a £50m contract from Network Rail in the UK to undertake electrification and signalling works under Phase 2 of the North West Triangle scheme.

The signalling project will be led by Balfour Beatty Rail in a joint venture with Balfour Beatty Engineering Services, responsible for the power and distribution works, while Invensys Rail will carry out the signalling, telecoms and SCADA (supervisroy control and data acquisition).

Work will include the design, supply and installation of 90 single-track kilometres of new electrification, including foundations, steel work, wiring and power distribution works.

The second phase of the North West Electrification Project will include wiring the double track between Earlestown and Bootle Branch Junction and completing electrification between Manchester and Liverpool Lime Street.

Electrification work under Phase 2 of the project is expected to be completed in December 2014.

The North West Project will cover the 24km Huyton-Wigan line, the 40km Manchester-Euxton Junction route and the 27km Blackpool North-Preston route.

Balfour won the first phase of the project in November 2011, which included the installation of 25kV 50Hz overhead electrification on 30km of double track between Castlefield Junction in Manchester and Newton-le-Willows Junction.

Scheduled to be completed by December 2013, work under Phase 1 also involves electrification of the curve on to the West Coast Main Line at Lowton Junction.

Under the third and fourth phases of the project, electrification work will be carried out on sections from Huyton to Wigan, Ordsall Lane Junction to Euxton Junction via Bolton and Preston to Blackpool North, which will be completed by December 2016.
