Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) in California, US, has selected Atkins to serve as a general engineering consultant (GEC) to support the rail network’s operations, maintenance and expansion plans.

UK-based Atkins has been selected to become part of a GEC framework to provide services as and when required.

The company, and other GECs, will provide services such as computer-aided design and drafting (CADD), train control design, programming and review, communication design, traction power design and relay calibration, and facilities design.

Metro currently transports around 50 million passengers per year.

"UK-based Atkins has been selected to become part of a GEC framework to provide services as and when required.

Atkins business sector manager Jon McDonald said that Metro is the US’s third-largest transit agency, building six rail lines with around 90 miles of track and 80 stations since opening the Blue Line in 1990.

"With funding from a variety of sources, the authority is likely to spend more than $20 billion over the next ten years to maintain, upgrade and expand its rail system," McDonald said.

Atkins currently serves as GEC for the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority in Atlanta, Georgia, and has provided system engineering and asset management services for Metropolitan Transportation Authority of New York.

The company has also worked with Miami-Dade Transit in Florida, Metropolitan Transportation Commission in Oakland, California, and the Charlotte Area Transit System in North Carolina.
