Swiss federal railway operator SBB has awarded a €115m contract to French rail manufacturer Alstom for the delivery of four Pendolino high-speed trains.

The current order marks the exercise of options on an agreement signed in July 2012 for the supply of eight similar trains.

Under this contract, Alstom will deliver a seven-car train set with a capacity to accommodate up to 430 passengers at a maximum speed of 250km/h.

The first two trains in this series are expected to be delivered in 2016, while the delivery of remaining trains is scheduled in 2017.

Alstom Transport Europe senior vice-president Andreas Knitter said: "With its unique tilting technology and its cross-border performance, Pendolino is perfectly adapted to SBB network."

The new trains will feature wide gangways and corridors, reclining seats, individual reading lights, electric sockets and large panoramic windows.

In a separate development, Alstom has unveiled its first Régiolis new-generation regional train, developed for the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur (PACA) region, France.

The PACA region will receive ten train sets from Alstom and it will be used on the Avignon-Carpentras line.

Alstom received an order for total 184 Régiolis trains from 12 French regional authorities and 56 trains have been delivered to nine French regions.
