Alstom has secured an €85m contract from Public Transport Victoria (PTV) in Australia for the delivery of eight X’trapolis trainsets for Melbourne’s suburban train network.

The delivery will bring the total number of Alstom X’Trapolis trains delivered to Victoria between 2002 and 2013 to 82.

Construction of the trains will be carried out at Alstom’s manufacturing facility at Ballarat in Australia.

The first of the new six-car trains are scheduled to enter service in 2015 and will allow PTV to offer additional services for the growing Melbourne network and increase the reliability of the entire system.

Alstom’s Ballarat manufacturing centre recently delivered seven X’Trapolis trains ordered by the Victoria state government in 2011.

"Construction of the trains will be carried out at Alstom’s manufacturing facility at Ballarat in Australia."

Alstom Transport managing director in Australia and New Zealand Bernard Joyce said that the additional trains will benefit commuters of Melbourne and give a boost to local jobs and regional manufacturing.

Capable of operating at speeds of about 130kmph, the X’Trapolis trains can carry over 1,400 passengers.

Every car is equipped with three passenger doors on each side, a customised seating layout along and a digital passenger information system (PIS).

Alstom is currently investing over €6m to upgrade and expand the Ballarat manufacturing site to support the government’s aim to create high technology engineering and manufacturing jobs.
