Syndicat des Transports d’Ile-de-France (STIF) has awarded a €150m contract to Alstom-Bombardier consortium for the delivery of ten additional MI09 double-deck trains.

This new order is the result of STIF exercising an option to the contract signed in 2009, in which Alstom will have a €95m share.

The new set of trains is expected to be delivered in 2007 and will be operated on the Île-de-France regional express network (RER) that serves 1.2 million passengers every day.

Alstom Transport France senior vice-president Ana Giros said: "The MI09 is the only train able to absorb a flow of over a million passengers a day, enabling RATP to smooth the traffic on its network.

"Priority was given not only to the capacity, but also to traction performance and passenger comfort."

Each of the cars of the new trains will be equipped with three wide doors on each side, offering better passenger flow in stations.

With its high-performance electric braking system, these vehicles will be able to minimise the energy consumption.

In addition, the operator will be able to anticipate maintenance operations and ensure a reliable service with the help of a train-ground Wi-Fi link that transmits operating parameters for the train.

In October last year, a consortium consisting of Alstom, Bombardier Transport and Areva received an order deliver 12 new MF01 metro sets to STIF and Paris transport operator Régie Autonome des Transports Parisiens (RATP).
