Alstom Transport has signed a contract with Chennai Metro Rail to supply 168 cars for the Chennai metro project in India.
Under the €243m ($313m) contract, Alstom will supply 42 train sets composed of four cars, each with an option for 16 additional metro cars.
The trains will include automatic train protection and automatic train operation features.
The stainless steel trains will also be equipped with a regenerative braking system and will operate on 25KV AC through an overhead catenary system at speeds of about 80km/h.
The first delivery is scheduled for 2012.
