The US state of Connecticut is planning to buy an additional 80 M8 rail cars as part of a deal with Kawasaki to replace older models.
Connecticut Governor M Jodi Rell will ask the state bond commission for $226.32m for the purchase.
The new cars have fewer seats but are equipped with better air-conditioning, electrical sockets at each seat and security cameras.
A total of 24 cars will be introduced on the Shore Line East line between New Haven and New London by the end of the year.
A further 300 M8 rail cars, placed in a previous order with Kawasaki, are being tested.
