Bombardier has received an order from Swiss Railways SBB to deliver 59 new Twindexx double-deck intercity trains, with the option for an extra 100 trains.

The contract, worth CHF1.8bn ($1.6bn), involves 436 fully air-conditioned carriages, providing over 36,000 seats.

Other features of the trains include spacious interior compartments, wide doors for entry and exit, wireless internet access and business class compartments.

The trains are expected to use the roll compensation system, which can raise the train speed in curves by 15% and save travel time.

Twindexx trains are also anticipated to have low operating costs, and the ECO4 technologies incorporated in the design are expected to reduce energy consumption by 10%.

All 59 trains are scheduled to be delivered by the end of 2019.
