Alstom has supplied the first Prima BB 475400 diesel locomotive to the French National Railways.
The delivery is part of a €836m ($1.1bn) 2004 framework contract for 400 diesel-electric locomotives.
France-based Alstom is working jointly with Siemens to complete the work by 2015.
The body shell, brakes, cab and drivers desk are expected to be developed by Alstom.
The company is also responsible for the bogies and the traction motors, according to railjournal.com.
Germany-based Siemens is expected to produce the electrical equipment.
Designed to meet European emission standards, the R43-engine run locomotive is expected to generate 20% more power than the previous version.
