Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH) in the US has awarded a €224m ($321m) contract to a Siemens-led consortium to upgrade the communication system of the New York-New Jersey railway by 2017.
Work involves installing a new Communication-based Train Control (CBTC) system that would cut intervals between trains so that more trains can use the same track.
This will increase the daily passenger capacity from 240,000 to 290,000, as well as enhancing safety and reliability of the railway while reducing maintenance costs.
The CBTC will also help in more efficient operation of the PATH railway and in knowing the exact location of trains.
The 100-year old PATH rail system runs from Newark and Hoboken in New Jersey to the World Trade Center and Herald Square in Manhattan.
The consortium is led by Siemens Mobility Division and includes Invensys Rail and D/A Builders, a joint venture between Daidone Electric and Aldridge Electric.
