China will build an underground rail track in the capital city of Beijing to connect its two key stations to cut travel times and congestion.

The 9km track will run between Beijing Railway Station in central Beijing and Beijing West Railway Station in south-west Beijing.

The subway will undercut the city's busiest roads, allowing passengers to travel between the two stations in 20 minutes.

The project is part of the country's plan to make Beijing accessible to other major cities by high-speed train within eight hours.

City transport officials expect the trains travelling to Beijing to carry nearly 100,000 passengers between the two stations daily by 2012.

The project has been estimated to cost nearly $454m (CNY3.1bn) and is expected to be finished by 2012.
