Swiss train manufacturer Stadler Rail has awarded a $75m contract to ABB Group to supply traction and onboard power equipment for light electric trains.

Under the contract, ABB will supply power equipment to be installed in 50 light electric trains. The trains, ordered from Stadler by Norwegian State Railways, are to run in the Greater Oslo area and southern Norway.

The order includes specially designed traction converters with integrated onboard power supplies and traction transformers. The traction converts electricity from overhead power lines or diesel generators to the voltage levels needed by trains' motors.

The contract also includes compact integrated traction converters for nearly 30 diesel-electric trains for operations in the US, Austria and other countries.
