Transport for Victoria (TfV) has ordered five additional X’Trapolis trainsets from Alstom to support Melbourne’s suburban rail services.

Valued at around €60m, the order will help expand TfV’s fleet to 106 trains. Upon delivery, the trains are expected to increase the reliability and capacity of the entire suburban rail system of the city.

The new X’Trapolis trainsets will be manufactured at Alstom’s Australian facility in Ballarat, which has been delivering such units to Melbourne since 2002.

“This contract will provide workload for the site, while we continue to work with the State to secure the long-term future of the Ballarat Workshops and the local supply chain.”

Alstom Australia and New Zealand managing director Mark Coxon said: “We are pleased to supply the Victorian government a further five trains from our industrial base in Ballarat.

“This contract will provide workload for the site between April and December 2019, while we continue to work with the State to secure the long-term future of the Ballarat Workshops and the local supply chain.”

The 145m-long X’Trapolis trains feature six cars and can carry 1,238 passengers. They are designed with improved automated safety features and accessibility to optimise passenger comfort and safety.

The contract also requires Alstom to maintain its Urbalis 400 Communications Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling systems, point machines, as well as operation and maintenance of the depot.
