US Department of Transportation has allocated $125m for the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) Silicon Valley Phase II project to the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA).

BART is the first project to receive funding under the Federal Transit Administration’s (FTA) Expedited Project Delivery Pilot Program.

US Secretary of Transportation Elaine L Chao said: “This Administration is focused on expediting infrastructure projects and is providing $125 million for expansion of BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit system) so that area residents can benefit from these improvements as quickly as possible.”

VTA is required to raise a minimum of 75% of the total project cost through non-federal contributions in order to avail FTA’S funding.

The FTA noted that VTA will receive the funding after it meets the programme’s mandatory requirements to advance with the construction grant agreement.

In January, VTA awarded the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) Silicon Valley Phase II Extension Project contract to the joint venture (JV) comprising Mott McDonald and PGH Wong Engineering (MMW).

Phase II of the project involves a 6.5-mile extension of the system from the Berryessa Station through downtown San Jose to the City of Santa Clara.

The project is estimated to cost $5.58bn and VTA is seeking $1.395bn in federal funding under the FTA’s Pilot Program.

Since the beginning of 2017, the US Government has invested $9.02bn through the FTA to support the nation’s transit infrastructure.
