The Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) in the US has placed an order of eight diesel multiple unit trains with Stadler to support operations on the Cotton Belt Regional Rail Project.

Under the $119m contract, Stadler will assemble and build eight FLIRT trains for DART. The trains will be capable of accommodating 240 seated passengers and 225 standing passengers.

The trains will be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), equipped with a comprehensive CCTV system and feature an automatic passenger counting system.

Each of the 267ft-long FLIRT trains will consist of four units with a power pack in the middle. The vehicles will be self-propelled by diesel multiple units (DMU) and meet both tier 4 EPA emissions standards and FRA Standards.

Stadler will deliver the design works for an equipment maintenance facility (EMF).

Stadler US CEO Martin Ritter said: “After completing several projects in Texas already, Stadler is honoured to now also supply DART with new state-of-the-art trains.

“We are proud that DART has chosen our FLIRT and know that we will be able to deliver a product that satisfies the customer to the highest degree.”

The latest contract is Stadler’s fourth in Texas. It has already supplied trains to CapMetro in Austin, Denton County Transportation Authority in Lewisville and TEXRail in Fort Worth.

In April, DART selected Jacobs as the principal design consultant for the Cotton Belt Regional Rail Project.

Jacobs will assist the joint venture (JV) of Archer Western Construction and Herzog Contracting, offering design and oversight services for track alignments, drainage, bridges, stations and signalling systems.

Passenger services on the project are expected to commence from 2022.
