UWC Group member entity Tikhvin Freight Car Building Plant has delivered a batch of Sggrs80 articulated flat cars for testing.

This is part of the contract signed between Russian freight cars producer United Wagon Company and European railway operator and infrastructure owner Deutsche Bahn (DB) for 160 freight cars.

After receiving the flat cars, Deutsche Bahn will conduct stationary testing and trial runs over several months.

The cars will also be tested for longitudinal and vertical stress on the frame structure, shock absorption of both empty and loaded cars, brake system performance, and drive along a winding route.

Deutsche Bahn chief procurement officer Uwe Günther said: “As we are planning to develop our freight shipment division, we will soon need an additional fleet of freight cars and railway engines.

“Since German manufacturers cannot fully meet our demand for rolling stock, we seek to collaborate with other companies, including Russia’s UWC. When choosing a supplier, we look first and foremost at the quality of the product being offered to us, and whether the car manufacturer meets the requirements of certification bodies and of our customers.

“I would like to point out that UWC meets all of these requirements. The cars we saw today received high praise from our team and will now be able to undergo a full series of tests at our testing facility. We hope the results will meet our expectations.”

The 80ft-long Sggrs six-axle container car has a capacity to load up to 108.6t. It can be used to carry ISO containers, tank containers and swap bodies.

The car also has a bogie with 22.5t axle load and can be operated on a 1,435mm gauge track.

All-Union Research and Development Centre for Transportation Technology, a member of the UWC Group, developed the Sggrs articulated flat car at the group’s production facility in Tikhvin, Russia.
