Bangkok metro in Thailand has commenced trial runs on the Green Line’s northern extension.

The maiden trial run was conducted between Mor Chit station and Ha Yaek Lat Phrao station.

The stretch forms part of the extension of the line from Mor Chit station to Khu Khot station in Pathum Thani province, travelling through Saphan Mai station in Bangkok.

Also known as Sukhumvit line, the Green line currently stretches around 38km from Mo Chit to Kheha and comprises 32 stations.

The line is being extended as part of the Ministry of Transport’s infrastructure development plan to facilitate railway connectivity between Bangkok and outlying areas.

The launch ceremony of the trial run was presided by Thailand’s Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha.

By the end of this year, four new stations will open along the Green Line northern extension route.

The extension is estimated to add 70,000 to 80,000 passengers every day on the route, as well as mitigate congestion at the terminal at Mor Chit station.

The Sukhumvit Line is part of the BTS SkyTrain, an electric mass transit railway system in Thailand. It is operated by the Bangkok Mass Transit System Public Company (BTSC).

In addition to the Sukhumvit Line, it includes the Silom Line, which terminates at National Stadium and Bang Wa.

In June, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) approved $311m in funding to support construction and subsequent operations of the Pink and Yellow lines for Bangkok’s mass rapid transit (MRT) system.

The package would be divided equally between the operators of the two lines.
