Spanish train manufacturer Talgo has shortlisted the Port of Mostyn in Wales as a potential site for its first locomotive and rolling stock manufacturing facility in the UK.

Mostyn is among six sites shortlisted by Talgo for the facility that could create 1,000 jobs. Three sites have been shortlisted in England, with two in Scotland.

A final decision on the site is expected next month.

A company spokesperson said: “All locations share great connectivity, would receive a major boost from job creation, and have the potential to supply people that can be skilled-up to meet the needs of building trains that can run at up to 235mph.”

“This is a tough race with a huge prize of up to 1,000 jobs at the end, but I remain hopeful that Talgo will make the right decision.”

Talgo further noted that the company would procure materials and expertise across the UK for its new facility.

The Spanish company has operations across 28 countries including Germany, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Russia, Saudi Arabia and the US.

Talgo has also been shortlisted to bid for the £2.75bn contract to supply at least 54 trainsets for the High-Speed 2 (HS2) between London and the West Midlands.

Welsh Government Economy Secretary Ken Skates said: “Over the last 18 months both I and Welsh Government officials have worked extremely closely with Talgo and the Port of Mostyn to help make this unique opportunity a reality.

“This is a tough race with a huge prize of up to 1,000 jobs at the end, but I remain hopeful that Talgo will make the right decision for itself and for North East Wales and choose Mostyn as the location for its UK base.”
