Spanish firm Talgo has secured a €107m contract to convert a number of Series 7 overnight trains into very-high-speed vehicles that will be capable of running at speeds of 330km/h.

The contract was awarded by Renfe and covers the conversion of a total of 156 coaches, which is equivalent to 13 trains.

The trains are currently operated by Renfe under the commercial brand ‘Tren hotel’.

Furthermore, the deal includes options for a further 72 coaches, which would total six additional trains.

The final contract value is subject to final requirements of Renfe and will amount to €151m if all options are executed.

Talgo intends to strengthen its position in the Spanish rolling stock market with the latest contract with Renfe.

The company previously delivered Series 102 and Series 112 trains (Talgo 350), as well as the Series 130 and Series 730 (the gauge-changing Talgo 250 and the hybrid Talgo 250 Dual) for deployment along Spain’s rail network.

It was also designated as the sole provider of a new generation of very-high-speed locomotives known as the Series 106 (Avril) trains last year, which are capable of carrying more than 520 passengers.

Spain-based Talgo currently operates in more than 44 countries, primarily focusing on the manufacture of passenger rolling stock.

The company has permanent industrial presence in North America, Europe and Asia.
