Swiss railway vehicle manufacturer Stadler has been awarded a $600m contract by the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) for the supply of 127 trains for Atlanta Metro in the US.

Under the terms of the contract, which also includes two options of 25 additional trains each, Stadler plans to supply 127 married pair units of CQ400 train, with the first units being placed into service in Atlanta starting 2023.

MARTA said it will rename the vehicles that will expand the current Stadler Metro product line, CQ400.

The 750V direct voltage third rail CQ400 vehicle will feature 128 seats, as well as ample standing space.

The 45.7m-long trains are compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and are easily accessible for passengers with reduced mobility.

They will be used for services to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, which is claimed to be the largest airport in the US.

The contract marks the first large Metro contract in the US for Stadler, which has been operating in the country since 2002.

Stadler US CEO Martin Ritter said: “We are extremely excited about this decision and are proud to have the opportunity to support MARTA in their fleet modernisation efforts.

“The first order of Metro trains for the US marks another milestone in the company’s history. After the order for double-deck trains for the Silicon Valley, we are especially pleased that now our Metro trains are being considered for service in the network to the world’s largest airport.”

Stadler will assemble the trains for Atlanta at the new plant in Salt Lake City. As per the terms of the contract, Stadler is obligated to create at least 60% of the project’s value in the US.
