Stadler to supply six additional Variobahn trams to Norway’s Bybanen Bergen Credit: Stadler

Stadler has received a €27m contract from Norway’s Bybanen Bergen to supply six additional Variobahn trams, which will extend the existing Stadler-fleet to 34 vehicles.

These trains will be used in Norway’s light rail network and are expected to be delivered by the end of 2021.

The seven-part Variobahns come with seven carriages, are 42m-long, bidirectional and have a capacity to accommodate 280 passengers.

These trains are step-free and have an air-conditioned passenger area.

Trains are equipped with five external swinging-sliding doors on each side to facilitate passenger flow.

Hordaland County Council CEO Ingrid Holm Svendsen said: “Hordaland County Council is very pleased with making another contract with Stadler for six additional light rail vehicles.

The Bergen light rail commenced service in 2010. The first service was a 9.8km-long stretch from the Bergen city centre to Nesttun in Fana.

In 2013, Stadler received a €100m contract from the city of Bergen to deliver eight additional seven-carriage Variobahn trams, thereby extending the existing fleet of 20 vehicles from five to seven carriages.

In June, German public transport operator Bogestra placed an order with Stadler to deliver eight additional Variobahn trams to strengthen its light rail fleet.
