Stadler has won a €300m ($333m) contract from Austrian Train Finance to supply 15 double-decker KISS trains to Austrian rail company WESTbahn.

The contract includes offering preventive and corrective maintenance services.

The Swiss rolling stock manufacturer will also carry out general inspections and revisions of the electric vehicles.

The 15 six-car double-decker multiple-unit trains will replace the existing trains on the Vienna–Salzburg line.

Austrian Train Finance, which is wholly owned by PCS Holding, will lease the trains to WESTbahn.

The trains will be 150m long, 2.8m wide and 4.59m high. It will feature 526 first-class seats and run at a maximum speed of 200km/h.

Trains also feature air-conditioning, gender-separated toilets, unobstructed access, a disabled toilet and wireless network.

Additionally, in the four intermediate cars, passengers can avail the modern self-service café.

Stadler Board of Directors chairman Peter Spuhler said: “I am proud that we have been able to supply WESTbahn with further state-of-the-art intercity double-decker trains.

“At the same time, this contract will also enable us to further expand our service business. I am also pleased that we prevailed against the Chinese thanks to our attractive customer-specific overall package.”

The China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC) was another contender for the contract. Stadler received the contract due to its total package of rail vehicles, maintenance and cost.

This is the third time Stadler will deliver trains for WESTbahn. In 2011, it delivered seven double-decker multiple-unit KISS trains. In December 2014, it received an order for ten additional KISS trains.

In July, WESTbahn announced plans to sell its entire train fleet of 17 trains to Deutsche Bahn (DB).

The first-generation trains have not received approval for Germany while the second-generation vehicles will be upgraded to 200km/h from 160km/h.

As per the contract, Stadler will also be responsible for the conversion and approval of the trains.

The first batch of trains will be delivered to DB in December and the second in 2021 after the supply of the new vehicles from Stadler.

Earlier this month, a consortium of Stadler and Erion won a €115m contract from Spanish state-owned railway infrastructure manager ADIF to deliver 22 rescue locomotives.
