Swiss rail manufacturer Stadler has won an Sfr270m ($274m) contract from Polish railway company PKP Intercity to deliver 12 electric multiple unit FLIRT trains.

Under the terms of the agreement, the Swiss rail manufacturer will offer maintenance services for 15 years.

Stadler submitted its bid in response to the tenders called by the Polish train service in December 2017.

The operator confirmed Stadler as the preferred bidder last month.

The new trains, which will be compliant with technical specifications for interoperability (TSI), will join the 20 Stadler ED160 vehicles delivered in 2015.

Since their induction, the ED160 series of trains have covered more than 23 million kilometres.

Belonging to the latest generation of long-distance FLIRT units, the trains will be built with aluminium to keep the bodies lightweight.

The interiors of the trains will be equipped with AC for the comfort of long-distance travellers. They will be divided into first and second class compartments, with each compartment having ergonomic seats.

Every seat will be equipped with individual lighting and power sockets. The trains will also feature a lounge bar.

Additionally, the trains will be equipped to meet the needs of passengers with reduced mobility. Electronic displays on the trains will give real-time information to passengers.

Last month, Stadler won a tender for a framework agreement to provide 80 Tramlink vehicles to Italian public transport company Azienda Trasporti Milanesi (ATM).

The initial six-year framework agreement is for 30 trams, which will be used on the Milan network.
