Stadler has secured a contract from Arriva Netherlands to maintain and service a total of the company’s 69 trains, including 18 new WINK units and 51 refurbished GTW trains.

Based upon an existing 15-year service and maintenance contract that has been in place between the two parties since 2006, the new deal is scheduled to be operational by 2020 and will run until 2035. It follows a €170m contract reached by Stadler and Arriva in November last year for the supply of 18 new bi-modal WINK trains and upgrade of 51 GTW trains.

Arriva plans to deploy the trains under the Noordelijke Lijnen concession in the Netherlands’ Friesland and Groningen region.

Stadler will additionally expand its depot at Leeuwarden in the Netherlands in order to add a third track for servicing and maintaining Arriva’s trains. The company is also expected to employ new workforce.

Arriva’s WINK trains will be powered by both renewable Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) and battery packs.

The trains are expected to ditch HVO fuel from 2025 when parts of the Leeuwarden-Groningen route will be electrified. They will then use stored energy in the batteries.

An upgrade of Arriva’s current GTW trains is expected to be carried out by 2020. The modification will allow trains to run on battery power.
