Stadler and Italy’s Ferrovie Autolinee regionali Ticinesi (FART) have signed a contract for the construction and delivery of eight new tailor-made trains.

The value of the order stands at around $106.5m.

From 2023, the new trains will replace the old rolling stock of Centovalli railway in Ticino.

This is the third order received by Stadler from a Ticino customer in a span of two years.

The FLIRT train is currently in use for TILO cross-border regional transport.

The new fleet will permit FART to cater to the needs of public transport and the region’s tourism industry, as well as comply with the Equal Rights for Persons with Disabilities Law.

Stadler said that the additional expenses will be covered by the Confederation and the canton of Ticino.

The company claimed that it will construct the new customised narrow-gauge trains for Ticino for the first time.

The new trains will include four four-car narrow-gauge multiple units and provide services for the Locarno-Domodossola route in Italy.

Moreover, as many as four three-car trains will be supplied to Centovalli for regional transport services.

The aluminium-built regional locomotives will be nearly 49m-long, whereas the international multiple units will measure approximately 63m.
