Siemens Mobility has received a €42m contract to deliver advanced rail signalling technology for Line A on the Medellin metro system in Colombia.

The contract includes system design, implementation and certification for the wayside system.

Additionally, it will upgrade signalling at the Patio de Bello depot, which serves the metro network, as well as optimise the interaction between legacy systems and the new wayside infrastructure.

The signalling systems will upgrade the antiquated technology, which was deployed more than 20 years ago.

To ensure normal metro operations throughout the day, Siemens will carry out the upgrade and installation works during night time.

The company will deploy the latest generation Westrace MKII interlockings, upgrade the LZB automated train control system and will replace the old rail signals with LED technology. Additionally, associated communications and energy installations will be modernised under the project.

To be equipped with a specific local control system, Patio Bello Westrace MK2 interlocking will control 111 track circuits, 58 point machines and 72 signals.

The upgrade works are scheduled to be completed by 2021.
