Siemens Mobility has submitted an outline planning application to build a £200m rail manufacturing facility in Goole, East Yorkshire, in the UK.

The plan, which was submitted to the East Riding of Yorkshire Council, encompasses the construction of a manufacturing and commissioning facility on a 104-acre site in Goole at junction 36.

The 80,000m² facility will include warehouse buildings and stabling sidings, as well as a four-storey office building.

Additionally, the site is expected to host Siemens’ UK rolling stock engineering and commissioning team.

”Reaching this milestone furthers our vision to create a sustainable, long-term and technically advanced facility that is an asset to the UK.“

The facility will enable Siemens to build trains for the expanding UK rolling stock market.

Commenting on the move, Siemens Mobility Rolling Stock managing director Will Wilson said: “This is a major step forward for our plans. With digitalisation we can help make trains and infrastructure intelligent, and reaching this milestone furthers our vision to create a sustainable, long-term and technically advanced facility that is an asset to the UK.

“It’s the result of positive dialogue with the local authority, statutory bodies and other stakeholders, including community representatives.”

Siemens first unveiled plans to build the rail manufacturing unit last year. It gained momentum after it was awarded with a £1.5bn contract from TfL to deliver 94 Tube trains.

The company expects the first phase of manufacturing site to open in 2023, subject to approval. The site is due to become fully operational by 2025.

As a part of this initiative, Siemens plans to create up to 700 jobs. An additional 250 jobs will be created during the construction period. The site will also support another 1,700 supply chain roles.
