Siemens Mobility is to unveil its new Vectron Dual Mode locomotive, which has been designed to conduct both diesel and electric operations, at the upcoming InnoTrans 2018 event taking place in Berlin in late September.

When running on electrified sections of track, the locomotive operates on electricity, saving fuel and reducing maintenance costs.

The Vectron Dual Mode locomotive can also be switched to diesel mode to operate on non-electrified sections of track. It is further capable of operating through gaps in electrified sections, eliminating the need to change locomotives.

Specifically developed to move freights in Germany, the locomotive, which weighs 90 metric tonnes, is expected to be made available for order by the end of next month.

“The Vectron Dual Mode combines the best of two worlds: it has a powerful diesel engine and is also equipped for electrical operation.”

Vectron Dual Mode is equipped with Vectron components and has a 1,435mm gauge. It is capable of running on a 15kV AC electrical system and features PZB train protection system.

Regardless of its operating mode, Vectron Dual Mode can create 2,000kW of rating at the wheel rim.

Featuring a 2,500l diesel fuel tank, the locomotive can operate at a maximum speed of 160km/h.

Siemens Mobility CEO Sabrina Soussan said: “The Vectron Dual Mode combines the best of two worlds: it has a powerful diesel engine and is also equipped for electrical operation.

“Wherever there is an overhead power line, the locomotive runs quietly without emissions, saving fuel and maintenance costs.

“With the Vectron Dual Mode, we have developed a sustainable, environmentally friendly and highly cost-effective alternative to conventional diesel locomotives.”
