Siemens Mobility has won a contract from the Nuremberg Transport Company (VAG) in Germany to supply 12 Avenio trams.

The contract, worth around €44m, also has a provision for 75 additional trams. The delivery of the trams is slated for 2022.

These four-compartment trams are 90% recyclable and will be used on both existing and proposed new lines. They are designed to support faster entries and exits, thereby reduce station stop times.

Each vehicle is 2.3m-wide, 36.85m-long and 3.55m-high with a folding entry ramp at the second door. They also feature large windows, LED lighting and a multi-functional area for commuters with restricted mobility, as well as providing WLAN.

The trams are fitted with an air duct system for a pleasant interior climate. Any recovered braking energy may be used for heating or fed back to the power grid.

Siemens Mobility CEO Sabrina Soussan said: “We have a long-standing partnership with VAG Nürnberg, and together we’ve implemented Germany’s first fully automated metro system.

“We’ve also initiated, for the first time worldwide, mixed operations with automated and driver-operated metros on the same route, making us forerunners in applying digital technologies. I’m especially pleased that, with our Avenio, we are now also delivering a state-of-the-art tram fleet to Nuremberg.”

In July, Siemens Mobility received a €200m contract to deliver 73 Avenio trams to public service provider Stadtwerke München (SWM).

Last year, the company secured an order to provide ten additional Avenio trams to BSAG.

In 2017, the company won a contract to deliver 67 Avenio trams to German operator Bremer Straßenbahn (BSAG).
