The UK’s GB Railfreight (GBRf) has signed a 15-year contract with Serco to provide train drivers and traction for its Caledonian Sleeper franchise.

Under this contract, GBRf will be providing train drivers and traction for six night services southbound and six night haulage services northbound a week, from Sunday to Friday.

This deal will help GBRf to secure approximately £100m in revenues over 15 years.

The contract will start on 1 April and consequently, four refurbished Class 92 trains will be used on the electrified routes south of Edinburgh and Glasgow.

The company will also use six Class 73/9 trains from October in north of Edinburgh. These trains are currently under construction at Wabtec’s facility in Loughborough.

Until these trains starting operation, Serco will be using Class 47s, on hire from Harry Needle Railroad Company (HNRC).

Serco recently signed a €200m contract with CAF for the delivery of 75 rolling stock coaches, in addition to related spares and technical support.

For Serco, CAF will manufacture five kinds of coaches for four trains with 16 coaches. The remaining 11 coaches will be provided to its Caledonian Sleeper franchise.
