China and Myanmar are planning to build a rail line linking south-west China with the Indian Ocean.

The 1,215km railroad will link China’s Yunnan province to the Kyaukphyu deep sea port in Myanmar’s western Rakhine State and will be built in phases over the next three years.

The first phase of the project will stretch 126km from Myanmar’s border town of Muse to the port city of Kyaukphyu, including 41 large and small bridges, 36 tunnels and seven railway stations.

The project also includes construction of a highway running parallel to the railroad.
