The government of Western Australia has chosen the NEWest Alliance as the preferred contractor for the Yanchep Rail Extension and Thornlie-Cockburn Link.
Both of these projects form part of the wider Metronet project and are expected to generate a total of around 3,000 jobs.

The NEWest Alliance consists of CIMIC Group company CPB Contractors and integrated services company Downer. The alliance will work with the Public Transport Authority regarding the design and construction schedule. The signing of the contract is scheduled to be completed next month.

Under the Yanchep Rail Extension, 14.5km will be added to the Joondalup Line and stations will be constructed at Alkimos, Eglinton and Yanchep.

The Thornlie-Cockburn Link will connect the communities between the Mandurah and Armadale lines with stations at Ranford Road and Nicholson Road in Canning Vale. The Thornlie and Cockburn Central stations will also be upgraded.
In August, the government selected Alstom as the preferred bidder to supply 252 electric multiple-unit cars. Of the 252 railcars, 102 will be for the Metronet rail expansion, 144 will replace the ageing A-Series railcars and six DMU cars will replace the existing Australind service.
Last year, the government allocated A$3.6bn ($2.71bn) for the Metronet passenger rail overhaul programme that aims to upgrade the transportation system in the city of Perth.
