A new platform has been officially opened at Bristol Parkway station in the UK to increase the frequency of train services in the region.

Bristol Parkway is an important station in the west serving passengers from Wales, south-west England and Birmingham.

The platform was officially opened by the UK Secretary of State for Transport Chris Grayling in an event that was attended by the representatives of train operating companies Great Western Railway (GWR) and CrossCountry.

“These improvements will boost reliability, increase the number of trains serving Bristol and along the route, and also allow new intercity trains to stop at the station too.”

Grayling said: “This vital upgrade at Bristol Parkway is a fantastic example of how we are enhancing rail travel up and down the country, benefitting millions of passengers.

“These improvements will boost reliability, increase the number of trains serving Bristol and along the route.”

A part of Network Rail’s Railway Upgrade Plan, the new platform will increase the capacity of the network and allow the operators to introduce new services.

Network Rail Western route managing director Mark Langman said: “The opening of the brand new platform one, together with the extension of existing platforms at Bristol Parkway marks another key milestone in the Greater West Programme.

“This region will continue to benefit from investment in the railway as later in the year we will be doubling the number of tracks into Bristol allowing more services to run to London and the west, as well as improving reliability and punctuality for services to the south west, Birmingham and the north.”

Last month, Network Rail completed major signalling upgrade works in the Bristol area, which, along with the doubling of tracks and the addition of the new platform, will enable future expansion of the region’s suburban rail network.

Improvements to track layout will also benefit the freight services in the region.
