Morocco-based public transport authority Casa Transports has entered a contract with Alstom to procure 66 Citadis X05 trams.

The vehicles will run on Casablanca’s upcoming tram lines 3 and 4, which are expected to open by end of 2023.

The €130m contract also includes the option for 22 additional units.

This comes nearly a month after Alstom secured a €200m order to supply 49 Citadis trams to the French city of Nantes.

Alstom Morocco president Nourddine Rhalmi said: “We are pleased to pursue our contribution to the development and modernisation of the Moroccan urban network thanks to our proven mobility solutions that benefit from the very latest technological innovations.

“We are very proud of this new order and of Casa Transports’ trust and confidence in Alstom’s Citadis solution. With a total fleet of at least 256 Citadis to be operated in Morocco, more people in Casablanca will be able to commute comfortably.”

The new trams will operate in double units, making them capable of accommodating up to 630 passengers. The vehicles will feature passenger information systems, as well as low-floor with 12 side doors to improve accessibility.

The Citadis trams will be developed partially in Barcelona, Spain, with several Moroccon companies supplying subsystems.

Multiple French sites will also be associated with the project.

Alstom had previously delivered 124 Citadis x02 trams, the power supply and the signalling equipment for Casablanca Line 1 and 2, which became operational in December 2012 and January 2019, respectively.

Separately, a consortium, which includes Alstom, has secured the contract to deliver the first section of Athens Metro Line 4.

Alstom’s share in the project amounts to €300m. It will be responsible for delivering rolling stock, signalling and infrastructure solutions.
