Mitsubishi Corporation (MC) has signed two contracts with Myanmar’s state-run Myanma Railways for the delivery of new rolling stock units.

The first contract is for 66 railcars that will be used in the Yangon Circular Railway (YCR) project while the second contract for 180 railcars will be delivered for the Yangon-Mandalay Railway (YM) project.

The overall cost of both the projects is nearly $663m, which will be financed by an international-yen-loan agreement between the governments of Myanmar and Japan.

These railcars will feature Japanese components and equipment and be built by Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles, a Spain-based manufacturer of rolling stock.

Delivery of the cars to Myanmar will take place in stages between 2023 and 2025.

The YCR Project is part of the plan to modernise and develop the Yangon Circular Railway.

The cars will run on a 46km track that loops around central Yangon, which is Myanmar’s largest commercial metropolis.

A train currently takes around 170 minutes to complete the loop, but the modernisation plan will shorten the time to approximately 110 minutes.

The YM Project is part of phase two of the work done to develop the Yangon-Mandalay Railway Line.

The railcars delivered by MC will run on approximately 620km of track that connects Yangon to Myanmar’s second-largest city of Mandalay via the country’s capital, Naypyidaw.

After the improvements to the line, the journey time will be reduced from 15 hours to roughly eight hours.

In November, a consortium comprising Mitsubishi and Orascom Construction secured an $800m contract to perform works for the first phase of Cairo Metro’s Line 4.

Awarded by the Egyptian Government’s National Authority for Tunnels (NAT), the contract involved the delivery of the Railway Systems, Track and Depot Works Package (CP411).
