London North Eastern Railway (LNER) has agreed to transfer its nine high-speed trains (HST) to East Midlands Railway (EMR) in the UK.

The LNER HSTs were refurbished in 2016 to include new seat covers, tables, carpets and toilets.

The trains will be equipped with an updated passenger information system before being delivered to the new operator of the Midland Mainline (MML) franchise, EMR.

LNR will replace the old HSTs with the new Azuma trains from Hitachi. LNR rolled out the first Azuma train on the London-Leeds route in May.

This transfer is temporary as EMR will receive 33 five-carriage intercity trains from Hitachi. They will operate within the Midland Mainline, including Sheffield, Chesterfield, Nottingham, Derby, Leicester and Lincoln, as well as Kettering and London St Pancras.

EMR will also receive four diesel multiple units from Hull Trains by the end of next year.

The new trains joining the EMR fleet are said to comply with the standards of the Passengers with Reduced Mobility Technical Specifications for Interoperability (PRM-TSI).

EMR’s owner, Abellio, won the contract to run the East Midlands Railway franchise in April.

It began operations in August and will continue until August 2027, with the option for a two-year extension.

In August, Bombardier Transportation received a £133m ($161m) contract for the maintenance of a fleet of Class 222 diesel-electric multiple unit (DEMU) trains. These trains operate on the East Midlands Railway mainline in the UK.

Maintenance work includes 27 Class 222 trains at the Derby Etches Park depot. Heavier component maintenance of the vehicles will be carried out at Bombardier Crewe.
