The Cologne Public Transport Authority (KVB) in Germany has signed a €363m contract with a consortium comprising Alstom and Kiepe Electric to procure 64 Citadis type trams.

The light-rail vehicles will operate across the entire urban area of Cologne, improving intra-city mobility.

As agreed, consortium leader Alstom will deliver 62 60m-long vehicles and two 30m-long vehicles.

The trams will be manufactured at Alstom’s Barcelona plant while Kiepe Electric’s Düsseldorf plant will deliver the electrical components. The tram bogies will come from Alstom’s Le Creusot plant in France.

The first pre-series vehicles are slated to be delivered to the KVB from the end of 2023 while the deliveries of the series vehicles will commence at the end of 2024.

KVB may procure up to 47 additional units, under some options included in the contract.

Alstom Germany and Austria managing director Dr Jörg Nikutta said: “Following the contract with VGF in Frankfurt, this order is further proof of the worldwide success of our flagship tram Citadis.

“Our trams will provide the passengers of the Cologne Public Transport Authority with the highest level of passenger comfort and will support the Cologne Public Transport Authority in successfully meeting the challenges of urban transport.”

The Citadis trams will be specially designed to operate in the German market and feature large windows, LEDs, large individual seats and travel information on large screens.

The vehicles will also be equipped with driver assistance systems, automatic dipped beam and rain sensors.

The trams will also have pivoting bogies to ensure maximum flexibility and a collision warning system to improve safety.

Earlier this month, Alstom secured another contract to deliver 66 Citadis X05 trams to Morocco’s Casa Transports.
