The first Elizabeth line train has completed its maiden test journey by travelling through the London Underground’s new tunnels.

Beginning from Abbey Wood station, the new Bombardier-manufactured train entered the tunnels at the Plumstead portal and then travelled under the Thames towards the Connaught Tunnel before returning to Abbey Wood.

The Elizabeth line’s developer, Crossrail, recently activated the 25kV overhead lines along a section of the tunnels in order to carry out the maiden testing programme.

"The line is expected to carry more than 200 million passengers annually and increase Central London’s rail capacity by nearly 10%."

The Elizabeth line is slated to start commercial service in December.

It is expected to provide a quicker and easier transportation alternative to commuters across London.

A comprehensive testing of the line’s railway and signalling infrastructure will now be carried out to ensure safe and reliable services once operations commence.

Elizabeth line operations director Howard Smith said: “This is a huge milestone for the project, nine years after construction first began.

“I’m thrilled to see the first train make its maiden voyage from Abbey Wood through the brand-new tunnels.

“Crucial testing is now underway to validate the safety and reliability of the Elizabeth line ahead of the launch.”

A single train is initially set to be used for testing operations within the tunnels, with more vehicles planned for introduction at a later date.

The Elizabeth line is jointly sponsored by the UK’s Department for Transport (DfT) and Transport for London (TfL).

The line is expected to carry more than 200 million passengers annually and increase Central London’s rail capacity by nearly 10% upon the commencement of full service.
